In Vitro Evolution

In vitro evolution is an iterative process, that mimics Darwinian evolution in a test tube. The two basic steps are the selection step, where functional molecules are physically separated from non-functional ones, and the amplification step, where successful molecules are copied many times to produce the material for the next selection step. The winning molecules are cloned, sequenced and examined biochemically to establish their functional characteristics.
